Shoes and famous feet

S
alvatore Ferragamo autobiography is full of episodes exposing the characters and whims of a host of famous clients. Gloria Swanson and Claudette Colbert chose classical shoes. Marlene Dietrich only wanted the latest fashion which she wore at most twice. Every year the Duchess of Windsor, who was Ferragamo’s customer from the forties, ordered two-tone shoes for the Spring/Summer and plain colours for the Autumn/Winter. Ferragamo understood perfectly the influence of the shoe on the female psiche, but not only its effect on women. From the beginning of his career he realised that the choice of a shoe amounted to offering his clientele infinite possibilities in a selection of models for every occasion and for every mood.
